You clean the bathroom properly, and by Thursday there is a smell again. The instinct is to clean harder, and it does not work — because the smell is not on the surfaces you cleaned.
There are four usual sources and three of them are underneath something.
1. Standing water under everything
This is the big one. Anything in a bathroom with a solid base collects a shallow pool: the soap dish, the toothbrush cup, the shampoo bottle, the sponge.
That pool never dries and never gets wiped, because it is out of sight. Within a week it is what you can smell.
The rule is simple and it matters more than any cleaning product: nothing in a bathroom should have a solid base. A magnetic soap holder keeps the bar in air. A wall-mounted toothbrush holder lets brushes dry pointing down instead of rotting in a cup.
2. The towels, and this is the one people get wrong
A towel folded over a rail touches itself on both sides. It stays damp until Thursday and it smells long before you notice it, because you are around it constantly.
A towel needs air on both faces. A swivel bar gives three towels that in the width of one rail and folds flat when nobody has showered.
If the towel smells when it is wet, it is not clean. Wash hot, and skip the fabric softener — softener coats fibres and is why old towels go sour faster.
3. The overflow hole in the sink
The small hole near the top of the basin drains into a channel that never gets cleaned and never dries. It is a common source and almost nobody knows it exists.
Pour boiling water and a little bleach into it every couple of months.
4. The drain trap
If the smell is sewage rather than damp, it is the trap. A trap that dries out — common in a shower used rarely, or a spare bathroom — lets the smell straight back up.
Run the tap for thirty seconds. If it goes away, that was it.
What does not fix it
Air freshener, which adds a second smell to the first. A stronger cleaner, if the source is under something. And more frequent cleaning, which is the response everyone tries first and the one least likely to work.
