Every balcony article is photographed on a terrace. If yours is two metres by three and half of it is taken by a chair, almost none of it applies.
The rule for a small balcony is simple: it has to clamp on, fold flat, or hang. Anything that stands on the floor is taking space you do not have.
Use the railing. It is the only free surface you own.
A clamp-on tray, a drink holder, a railing planter — none of it needs to touch the floor. The rail is free space you already own and almost nobody uses it.
This one change usually doubles the usable space, whatever you actually put up there.
Light it, and it doubles in hours.
A balcony without light is a daytime balcony. With light it becomes somewhere you sit in the evening, which is most of when you actually want to be out there.
Outdoor LED candles solve the part a real flame cannot: on a balcony with any wind at all, an actual candle lasts about four minutes. These run on a timer, come on at dusk on their own, and rain does not end the evening either.
Choose metal over ceramic. All of it.
Wind, rain and temperature swings are hard on outdoor things, and a small balcony means everything is within knocking distance. Ceramic planters, glass lanterns and glass tumblers all end the same way.
Powder-coated metal and resin last years and look better as they weather.
The one soft thing, brought out and taken back in
A balcony this size has no room for permanent soft furniture, and nothing left outside stays dry for long anyway. The better habit is one throw kept by the door — a fleece throw is light enough to grab on the way out and fold back over an arm on the way in, rather than a heavy blanket you have to think about moving.
A cold chair is not the end of the evening if the throw is already by the door.
What to skip
Furniture sets, parasols, large planters and anything described as garden. It will not fit, it will not survive the wind, and it will take the space you actually wanted to sit in.
