You look fine in the mirror at home, get to a hotel, and look like you have been unwell for a week.
The mirror is not lying and neither was the one at home. The thing that changed is where the light is coming from, and once you know the rule you can stop taking it personally.
The rule
Light from above casts every feature downward: shadows under the eyes, under the nose, under the jaw. Light from in front fills those shadows in.
Almost every bathroom in the world has a light directly above the mirror or on the ceiling behind you. So almost every bathroom mirror shows you the harsher version. Bathrooms with a light beside the mirror are rare and expensive, which is why the ones in shops feel flattering.
None of this is about how you look. It is about which direction the photons came from.
What actually fixes it
A light source at face height, in front of you. That is the entire solution and it does not require rewiring anything.
A mirror with its own ring of light is the practical version, because the light and the reflection are in the same place by definition. It takes the space of a phone, which matters when you are doing this in a hotel or on a train.
The temperature setting matters more than people expect. Cool white is accurate and unflattering. Warm is flattering and will fool you about colour, which is a problem if you are matching anything. Neutral is the one to use if you have to pick a single setting.
Two habits that help more than any product
Do anything colour-critical near a window, in daylight, once. You will find that what looked right under the bathroom light is a shade off.
And check in two mirrors before deciding something is wrong. If it only appears in one, it was the light.
The related thing nobody mentions
The same rule governs video calls, which is why people look tired on camera in rooms where they look fine in person. The laptop screen is below your face and the ceiling light is above it. A window in front of you beats every ring light ever sold.
What else lives in the same drawer
Once the light is right, the tools stop fighting you. A proper set of steel clippers and files lasts decades because there is nothing in it to break, and a boar bristle brush is the one that stops hair going static in dry winter air.
The rest is in the Bathroom.

Common questions
Why do you look worse in a hotel mirror than at home?
It is not about how you look — it is the direction the light comes from; light from above casts shadows under the eyes, nose and jaw, and most bathrooms light the mirror from above or behind.
What actually fixes bad mirror lighting?
A light source at face height, in front of you — a mirror with its own ring of light puts the light and the reflection in the same place and takes up the space of a phone.
What colour temperature should mirror light be?
Cool white is accurate but unflattering, warm is flattering but will fool you about colour, and neutral is the one to use if you can only pick a single setting.
How can you tell if a mirror is lying to you rather than you actually looking off?
Check in two mirrors — if the flaw only shows up in one of them, it was the light, not you.
