Why the Sunday tidy fails
Coiling and tying a cable is undone the first time you unplug it, and the tie ends up in a drawer. The cable is loose again and nothing brings it back.
What works is having something that lives on the cable permanently. A strap with a snap that stays attached while the cable is in use keeps it tidy the next time you unplug it — that is the difference between tidying and organising, and it is the whole trick. Renting changes the options, not the outcome
Under-desk trays and clips almost all assume you can screw into the desk or the wall. If the desk is not yours, that is out.
Everything that works without drilling does one of two things: it clamps, or it uses the weight of something already on the desk. Which is why the next two matter more than they look.
Get the cables off the surface first
A laptop stand lifts the machine and takes its cables up with it, which clears the run of desk directly in front of you — the part you actually use. It also does what a desk mat would have done: it draws a line under the laptop that everything else on the desk reads against.
Give the wandering things a home
The phone cable is the one that ends up across the desk, because the phone moves. A weighted stand fixes the phone's position and the cable stops travelling. The weight matters — a light stand tips when you tap the screen and the cable comes with it.
The order
Straps on every cable first. Then the mat. Then the stand and the phone. Doing it in that order means the pile does not come back while you are still working on it.
